This is what a Lexus RC based four door coupe might look like

It feels like there is a secret law in Germany mandating that every domestic automaker there must offer at least one model with a four-door coupe bodystyle like the BMW Gran Coupes, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7. Several of the German brands even have the swoopy sedans in multiple sizes. So far, Lexus has stayed out of that fray, but maybe not for long, if a recently spotted test car makes it to market.
The brand is known to be testing a highly styled four-door coupe, roughly the size of the GS, under heavy camouflage. Little is known about the new model at the moment, but its existence makes sense. If it really wants to take the on Germans, Lexus is going to have to fight them toe-to-toe with competing models â" especially with ones understood to have high margins.
Pictured above is a rendering from artist Theophilus Chin imagining a slightly smaller take on the genre based on the RC coupe, which he calls the RC GT. His design leaves the original shape almost untouched, but shortens the front doors to allow room for a rear doors under the arching roof. His GT would be aimed more against the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and rumored Mercedes-Benz C-Class four-door coupe, rather than the larger models Lexus actually appears to be targeting with its vehicle under development. His concept certainly nails the look, though, and while it might not have a basis in reality, we thought that its well-resolved enough that youd want to take a look, if only as a "what couldve been" flight of fancy.

Video Roadkill builds crazy cheap 1968 Dodge Charger rat rod using an old motorhome

Certain requests for description simply cannot be fulfilled, like if someone asked you to describe Picassos Guernica or Gilliams Brazil. There is only one appropriate answer to such entreaties, and that is: "You just gotta see it." Thats where we are with the latest episode of Roadkill, wherein Messrs Freiburger and Finnegan dig out a 1968 Dodge Charger that Freiburger acquired in exchange for a set of cylinder heads, and intend to stuff it with the big-block motor from a long-bed, three-quarter ton Dodge pickup.
Only the pickup is too nice to tear apart, and the Charger needs a whole lot more lovin â" and parts â" than initially expected. Enter, stage right, the Class A Dodge Pace Arrow motorhome with a 440 big-block purchased for $1,000, and a retired Plymouth Fury from a previous episode.
What ensues over the course of the 40-minute installment is more cuttin, yankin, leakin, stallin, hammerin and smokin action than youve seen in a long time, and some techniques that would have made even Cooter wonder, "Im not sure if we should do that." By the end, though, the payoff is good enough to make you think about perusing AutoTrader for a 68 Charger just to see if maybe...
And still, we havent properly described it, so have a watch of the video below.

5 Tips for Buying Your First Car
If youre just starting out, your first car will probably be your largest purchase to date. That makes it the most important financial decision of your life. So youll want to make sure to choose a car that fits your budget, without sacrificing quality or safety. Here are five things to consider when buying your first car.
1. Be realistic
Most people dont buy a luxury car the first time around. Youll want to set a realistic budget to meet your monthly payments.
Or, if you can afford it, you can pay for the entire car upfront with cash. If youve managed to save enough or are lucky enough have a windfall to spend, you can avoid car payments and just calculate your budget for fuel, insurance, and maintenance. Either way, think about whether you need any extra features, like an extended warranty or special detailing, and skip those options if you find them unnecessary or cant afford them.
2. Shop for auto insurance
Most states requires auto insurance. Typically, theyll require just liability insurance, which covers damages and injuries to the other driver if youre at fault. But you might want to go with comprehensive coverage if youre buying a newer vehicle, to cover yourself in case of damage. Base your decision on the following:
- Level of coverage: Decide what level of coverage you need, whether its minimum coverage, basic, extended, or premium. Depending on what level you choose, you can have lower deductibles, or coverage for a rental car, towing, glass repairs, and so on.
- Financial strength: Sources such as A.M. Best can help you gauge whether a given insurer will be reliable when its time to make a claim.
- Price: Make sure you compare quotes across carriers to get the best deal possible. A recent study by NerdWallet found that American drivers on average overpay for car insurance by $368 each year. Rates also can vary among carriers for the same location, so it pays to compare. To make it easier to learn which insurance company is likely to give you the best price, use features such as NerdWallets comparison tool, which gives you free estimates without collecting personal information.
- Service : Note your own interactions with insurers, as well as information from your state insurance agency and other customers (if they post online complaints, for instance), to gauge the level of service you can expect from the company.
- Look for discounts : While the level of insurance you select should depend on your financial situation, location, and vehicle, its better to go a little overboard than the other way around. That said, ask about any discounts, such as those for automatic payments or for driving below a certain mileage threshold, or any good student discounts.
3. Find a co-signer
If youre in your early 20s or younger, you might need a co-signer to get a car, because its possible that your current credit history wont qualify you for a loan on your own. Having a co-signer might also help you get lower interest rates and better terms. But remember that if you get a co-signer and you fail to make your payments, the co-signer will be legally responsible for the cost, so make sure you have enough to make your monthly payments. A co-signer also might have to share legal liability if you get involved in an accident.
4. Double-check used cars
Used cars are cheaper for a reason: They tend to have more wear and tear. So it pays to be extra careful when choosing one. Be sure to check the following:
- Research the vehicles history via Carfax or a similar source.
- Carefully read the dealers return policy.
- Check if the mileage disclosures match the odometer reading on the car.
- See if the car has any recalled parts or safety defects by checking the NHTSAs online database by using the cars vehicle identification number. (Every car has a VIN.) If you see that there were recalls made on parts of the car, ask the seller for proof of the repairs.
- Have the car inspected by an independent mechanic before buying.
5. Bring a second set of eyes
Whether youre intimidated by the thought of a high-pressure salesperson or youre worried youll lose self-control, strongly consider bringing someone with you. A mechanic friend would be a great choice, but even an experienced car-buyer like a parent could be highly useful. He or she can help you remember details about the car, figure out whether youre getting a fair offer, and spot pros and cons you might miss.
Final word
Your first car should be a reliable vehicle that doesnt break the bank. With this in mind, set a realistic budget and stick to it. Also shop for insurance beforehand, so you know whether you can actually afford a given car. Keep safety in mind as well, especially when shopping for a used car.
Finally, bring a family member or friend with you to limit the chance of making a poor decision. Doing that will also make the purchase less intimidating, which should make things a lot easier!

Turn up your speakers for this Shelby powered Sunbeam Tiger and friends

Most of us are never going to be like Jay Leno and drive a new car every day. However, its possibly affordable to collect a handful of vintage rides, especially if you look a touch off the beaten path. In recent video, Petrolicious highlights Hans Abrahams, who is doing just that. He has three 1960s, European classics that love to be driven.
The absolute star of the trio is a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. In the cabin, it has the meaty growl of a muscle car, but outside it has a little of the raspiness of period European cars. Abrahams says its mostly original except for its Ford 289-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) V8 with Shelby parts, producing around 273 horsepower. He says i ts a bit difficult to maintain and hard to keep cool, but when you hear it, you know the trouble is worth it.
Next up, is Abrahams 1965 MGB that is a bit of a monster in its own right. It lacks the Tigers oomph under the hood, but its loud enough to blow out Petrolicious microphone. Its still a very cool little roadster.
Finally, there is a 1967 Volvo Amazon 123GT, Abrahams daily driver, that might secretly be the best of the lot. While it probably wouldnt win a race with its two siblings in Abrahams garage, its the most livable and still sounds absolutely amazing. At full chat, its like a hive of angry hornets live under the hood.
Scroll down and turn up the speakers to listen to this European power trio.

In addition, there is a whole host of practical information â" for example how to load the vehicle for a family holiday; driving with children and pets; tips for long-distance drives; advice on ways of driving more fuel efficiently and preparing for winter driving.
Future developments will include the ability to book vehicle servicing and maintenance with a Volvo retailer, while new send-to-car capabilities could, for example, allow customers to pre-set the cabin temperature or send destination information to their carâs satnav ahead of a journey.

Shop around for car loans before visiting showroom
Published: Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, 9:00Â p.m.
For many consumers, the great car deals in 2014 are the ultra-low auto loan rates combined with easier credit.
But saving real money will require digging through cryptic lingo for car loans, going beyond some wacky ads and, yes, even decoding some charges.
Weve seen federal regulators in the past month highlight some ways consumers have gotten taken for a ride in the car-buying process.
In January, the Federal Trade Commission announced âOperation Steer Clear,â which cracked down on deceptive advertising. Get a postcard from a car dealer saying you won a prize at a dealership? Dont bank on a fat check.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also is taking issue with dealer markups involving car loans obtained at dealerships, bringing home the point that consumers need to shop around for loans before heading into the showroom.
For consumers, its essential to know the traps and tips.
⢠Should I worry about being able to get a car loan?
Not really. Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moodys Analytics, said auto lending had one of its best years in 2013, and lending should remain strong in 2014.
âSubprime auto lending is almost back to its prerecession levels,â Zandi said.
Overall, borrowers with good credit can expect to find rates below 4 percent on new- and used-car loans, according to Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com.
⢠Take steps to lock up a loan before you take a test drive.
In December, the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau brought to light charges of discrimination in lending that allegedly took place through dealer markups regarding interest rates.
More than 235,000 African-American, Hispanic and other minority auto loan borrowers who dealt with Ally Financial were unfairly charged higher interest rates for loans on cars or trucks because of discriminatory practices, according to the federal regulators.
Ally Financial and Ally Bank were ordered to pay $80 million to harmed borrowers and pay $18 million in penalties relating to auto loans made between April 2011 and December 2013. In a statement, Ally said the company does not engage in or condone violations of law or discriminatory practices and, based on the companys analysis of its business, it does not believe that there is measurable discrimination by auto dealers.
The lesson for consumers: Make certain to be pre-approved for a car loan before shopping for a car. Then, you have a better idea of what type of loan rate would apply to someone with your credit score, said Christopher Kukla, senior vice president for the Center for Responsible Lending.
Kukla pointed out that consumers dont know what kind of extra compensation dealers might be getting on the auto loan markups.
âYoure paying the dealer for a service, but you dont know how much youre paying the dealer for that service,â Kukla said.
â¢What if an ad looks too good to be true?
Consider that all might not be on the up-and-up.
The FTC said false claims made by some dealers drove consumers to believe they could keep super-low monthly payments until the car was paid off. But the payments were temporary teasers, after which consumers would owe a higher amount each month or perhaps a large balloon payment at a given date.
â¢The price of the car isnt just a sticker on the window.
Consumers want to compare the going deals on similar makes and models by going to sites such as Kelley Blue Book at KBB.com.
But get a detailed breakdown of fees and features on a specific deal, too.
One consumer told me a few weeks ago that while considering buying an SUV, he spotted that he was charged for a full tank of gas.
âOh, really? Youre going to take $30,000 of my money, and youre going to make me pay $60 for a tank of gas?â said Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book.
Spot an item like that one? Negotiate.
Susan Tompor writes for the Detroit Free Press.

Report NYC to track traffic fatalities on website as new mayor vows to end them in 10 years

A world without traffic fatalities sounds like a pretty nice future. New Yorks newly inaugurated mayor, Bill de Blasio, is aiming to make the Big Apple just such a place, following through on his ambitious "Vision Zero" plan to eliminate all fatalities to drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians on the citys streets within 10 years.
If that sounds like a tall order, it is. To help monitor the progress of the plan, Right of Way, an advocacy group, has established a website to track deaths in the four categories mentioned above, and to keep an eye on the progress of de Blasios plan. Every time theres a death, RoW will tweet about it, as well, as part of an ongoing Twitter campaign.
"There will obviously be many competing interests for de Blasios attention when he takes office, but with people of all ages being killed in traffic across the five boroughs nearly every single day, Vision Zero must remain a top priority," said Right of Way organizer Keegan Stephen in a statement, according to Gothamist.
De Blasios plan rests on a number of factors, which are laid out on his campaign website. Improving on the 291 people killed in the past year will likely require the city to redesign intersections and narrow wider streets that "encourage reckless passing and speeding." Sidewalks and medians will be made wider as well, and an expansion of so-called "slow zones," where the speed limit sits at a mere 20 miles per hour, will be expanded. Naturally, the NYPDs traffic enforcement officers will also crack down on speeders even harder. Mobile traffic cameras will also play a larger role, with de Blasio claiming that a reduction in speeding comes with such monitoring.
What are your thoughts on these plans? Does completely eliminating traffic deaths in one of the worlds largest cities even seem tenable in a 10-year timeframe, no matter how much is done to contain reckless driving and/or speeding? We want to hear from you in Comments.

Followup Brazil contemplates safety exemption for VW Kombi as it goes out of production today w poll

Brazil: the country of carnivals, indescribable beauty adjacent to abject poverty, Ayrton Senna and old Volkswagen models. Only theyre not old â" theyre new, theyre just based on old designs. The original Beetle continued production there long after it had been phased out elsewhere, but the original Kombi van has lasted much longer. That ends today, however, with the iconic VW Microbus ambling out of production on the last day of 2013.
VW kept making the van in Brazil with the original air-cooled 1.2-liter boxer four until 2005, after which the original design was updated with a 1.4-liter water-cooled engine. Today, however, it ultimately falls prey to safety regulations that mandate that all vehicles â" no matter how old their design â" need to have airbags and ABS, forcing Volkswagen do Brasil to cease production of the Microbus after a 56-year production run. But the latest word is that the Kombi (as its presently known) could get a stay of execution â" or at least a resurrection in short order.
According to reports, the Brazilian government is looking into granting the Type 2 Microbus an exemption from said safety regulations, reasoning that the van was designed long before the advent of airbags and ABS. If the measure goes through, the Kombi Last Edition (pictured above) could prove not to be the last at all. So what do you think, should the Microbus get an exemption from Brazilian safety regulations for nostalgias sake? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.

Mercedes to open new campus in Long Beach CA

Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster and Mercedes Vice President of Sales Dietmar Exler broke ground on the huge, new facility that was formerly the site of a Boeing 717 factory. As you can see from the photo on the right, theyre both pretty happy about it.
The new campus will be split into two buildings that will sit on 52.2 acres of land across the street from the Long Beach Airport. The venue will open in the first quarter of 2015.
The new location combines Mercedes USAs Vehicle Preparation Center, which inspects and distributes vehicles to dealers when they arrive in the US, the Western Region Office, which does dealer sales support, and the Learning and Performance Office for employee training.
Autoblog reached out to Mercedes to learn more about its plans for the new campus. We will update this story, when and if we hear back. Until then, scroll down to read the full announcement below.
New Facility to Bring Together Several Business Units to Increase Efficiencies
LONG BEACH, C.A. â"Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today officially marked the commencement of construction on a new West Coast regional facility in Long Beach, California. The new location serves as the future home of MBUSAs Vehicle Preparation Center, Western Region and Learning & Performance Offices, which are all currently located in Southern California.
The new facility will consist of two buildings, totaling 1,091,754 sq. ft. on a 52.2 acre lot. The historic location opened in 1941 as home to the Douglas Aircraft Company and later served as the Boeing 717 aircraft manufacturing facility until closing in 2006. Located across the street from the Long Beach Airport in a mixed-use development known as Pacific Pointe at Douglas Park, the facility is expected to be ready to begin business operations in the first quarter of 2015.
"Southern California is the car culture capital of the world and it remains one of the largest markets for the Mercedes-Benz brand. Hollywood, great weather, a passion for the automobile and continued growth of the luxury market have all contributed to this singular position," said Dietmar Exler, vice president of sales for MBUSA. "Thirty years ago Mercedes- Benz planted roots in Southern California and expanding sales volume necessitates that we have the most efficient and effective structure to support our dealers in providing a world-class customer experience."
"I am thrilled Mercedes-Benz selected Long Beach as its new West Coast home," said Bob Foster, Mayor of Long Beach. "This is an iconic brand moving into an iconic building with a plan to re-imagine the former 717 site into a state-of-the-art facility that will activate this property for many years to come."
The new facility will include the following business operations:
ï· VEHICLE PREPARATION CENTER â" The Vehicle Preparation Center is responsible for ensuring Mercedes-Benz vehicles are ready to deliver once they arrive in the United States. Distribution tasks include receiving vehicles from vessels, inventory management for the U.S. market, port of entry services, shipping and wholesaling of vehicles. Quality tasks include vehicle inspection and factory quality checks. MBUSA operates three Vehicle Preparation Centers located in Baltimore, MD, Brunswick, GA and Carson, CA.
ï· WESTERN REGION OFFICE â" The MBUSA Western Region supports 82 dealerships with sales and fixed operations across 12 states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Texas and Utah. Report Ford ditching Microsoft in favor of BlackBerry QNX for next gen Sync

Ask the average consumer â" at least, those who follow the goings-on in the automotive industry â" which carmaker theyd most closely associate Microsoft, and the answer youd most likely get would be Ford. The Blue Oval automaker, after all, was at the forefront of bringing Microsoft technology into cars with its pioneering Sync system, and, though reality didnt turn out as such, Fords CEO was recently touted as a potential future head of the Redmond-based software giant. But that relationship, according to the latest reports, could be coming to an end.
Alan Mullaly kiboshed the idea of leaving Dearborn for Redmond, but more importantly Ford is tipped to be ditching Microsoft in developing its next-generation Sync system. In its place, Ford is expected to partner with BlackBerrys QNX division.
Now, before you go balking "BlackBerry?! But theyre finished!" consider that QNX is (or at least was) an independent entity that Research In Motion (as BlackBerrys Ontario-based parent company was then known) just happened to have bought back in 2010. QNX provides control systems to everything from nuclear power plants and UAVs to automakers like Audi, BMW and Porsche.
Ford is apparently keen to improve its in-car technology â" an increasingly vital factor for new car buyers â" while cutting Microsoft and its comparatively large licensing fees out of the equation.

Report Ford moving medium duty F Series production from Mexico to Ohio
A few more Ford trucks will be built in the US in the near future with news that production of the F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks will move from Mexico to Fords Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, OH. Ford hasnt confirmed a precise timeline for the move, but The Detroit News claims the Blue Oval will make the shift later this year or in early 2015.
As Ford spokesperson Mike Levine reminded us, back in 2011, Ford announced in an investor release that it would shift production "after the [Ohio] plant stops current production of the Ford E-Series vans." According to that release, the Ohio factory will also receive $128 million in upgrades to build the new trucks, plus the F53 motorhome chassis and F59 commercial chassis.
The trucks are currently built in Escobedo, Mexico, as part of a joint venture with Navistar International. The Kansas City Assembly Plant in Kansas City, MO will begin building the new Transit van. The shift is part of Fords long-term plan to move more commercial vehicle production to the US because it, "will be able to streamline and strengthen the engineering and manufacturing of our next-generation medium-duty trucks," said then-Ford President Mark Fields in the 2011 release. According to The Detroit News, Ford will issue a more detailed release about the shift in production on February 28.

Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept unveiled in Beijing

This is the New Midsize Coupe in the metal, and as a demonstrator of the versatility of the Modular Transverse Matrix platforms, Volkswagen says its what "customers all over the world can look forward to over the next few years." Wider than a Passat, shorter and lower than a Jetta and weighing less than a Jetta, these are the cues a sport sedan on the MQB-B platform could wear.
VW designers didnt take any shortcuts with the detailing, the every corner of the sedan meant to reinforce its presence and draw the eye in. At the front of that long bonnet is a three-bar grilled, with the top bar painted high-gloss black to make the car look lower, the lower two bars finished in chrome look at the front and brushed aluminum in back. They front a collection of finned, ornamental modules, the design reaching all the way into the LED headlights where the finned modules act as cooling vanes for the headlights. The motif is recreated in the lower intakes as well.
From the side you get a full view of the long hood and short decklid, set off by a lower sill in metal. The Dragon Red paint is matched in the 20-inch wheels, with spokes carrying a touch of the body color, and their black inner surfaces complementing the high-gloss black roof panel. In back, 3D LED taillights have aluminum accents, sitting high above twin exhaust pipes split by a high-gloss black diffuser.
The 217-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo will scoot the New Midsize Coupe to 62 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, and with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission VW says a driver can get fuel economy of 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers, about 37 mpg.
Were told there wont be any sacrifice in the cabin for that, with "ample space for five," cargo capacity of 500 liters, trim in Silk and Ebony Black with Dragon Red piping, Alcantara on the headliner and pillars, and controls from the Golf (which rides on the MQB-A platform).
Theres a press release below with more details. We wouldnt mind being a part of the world that gets a shot at this, should VW make it...

10. Lower fuel consumption thanks to efficient engine and gearbox (7-speed DSG), plus a cD value of 0.299 (cD x A = 0.643 m2).
Wolfsburg / Beijing, April 2014. Its a four-door coupé the like of which has never been seen before in this vehicle class: the New Midsize Coupé concept car. Volkswagen has brought the concept car to Beijing for its world premiere at Auto China 2014. The New part goes without saying: the New Midsize Coupé is as new as a new car can be. Coupé is also unambiguous: the New Midsize Coupé is low in height (1,422 mm) and very wide (1,838 mm), it has a low visual centre of gravity, short overhangs, muscular shoulders and side sections, a dynamic roof line with markedly swept-back C-pillars, a short boot lid and long bonnet. Midsize is less obvious. It is normally the term for a car of the Passat class. However, the concept car is just 4,597 mm long and thus shorter than a Passat and shorter even than the Jetta. However, as mentioned the concept car outdoes the other two in terms of its width â" and it is thus midsized. So clearly this concept car exhibits proportions of an extremely sporty nature. The team led by Volkswagen head designer Klaus Bischoff integrated these sharp proportions in a body design that makes the New Midsize Coupé a powerful and avant-garde proponent of a new, compact saloon class.
A saloon and a sports car. When viewed from the front and rear, it immediately becomes apparent that the designers have placed what is known as the "greenhouse", the roof section with all windows, on a very muscular body frame. This strongly emphasises the powerfully modulated shoulder sections and large 20-inch wheels â" which is a trait of high-class sports cars. The concept car is painted in "Dragon Red" colour; this brilliant red special effects paint is part of the total concept, because it highlights the powerful modulation of the body especially well. High-gloss black elements such as the roof surface with its integrated panoramic tilt/slide roof create a colour contrast.
Front end ... The design team styled the front end to be very progressive. The designers shifted the visual centre of gravity downwards by special styling techniques. This has resulted in greater dynamism. As mentioned, the New Midsize Coupé is distinguished by a very long bonnet and a very short front overhang. These proportions were enabled by the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) by Volkswagen, and this innovative technical base opened up new possibilities for designers. The team led by Klaus Bischoff took full advantage of this and created an entirely new front-end concept with an avant-garde radiator grille, LED headlights in 3D look and a large lower air inlet with a unique and distinctive chrome signature that is based on Volkswagen design DNA.
... radiator grille and LED headlights. The radiator grille structure consists of three cross fins and the VW badge. The upper cross fin is painted in high-gloss black, while the lower two have a polished chrome look towards the front and are brushed aluminium towards the engine. The upper black cross fin makes the New Midsize Coupé appear even lower in front than it already is, while the bright chrome/aluminium fins emphasise its width. Between the cross fins, there are 36 compact modules, each with three small vertical fins that give the visual effect of hovering within the radiator grille. The radiator grille forms a stylistic unit together with the also newly designed LED headlights and LED daytime running lights that are integrated here â" the forms of these elements merge together. Not only do the three cross fins continue into the headlight housings; so do the compact modules, each with three vertical fins. In the radiator grille, these modules perform a purely visual task. However, in the headlights they act as cooling elements for the LED headlights â" "form follows function". The LED unit itself also appears to visually hover within the headlight housing.
... bumpers and air inlets. Under the radiator grille, there is a horizontally oriented area painted in body colour, and beneath this comes the central lower air inlet. On its sides, the air inlet is bordered by two diagonal aerodynamic elements that run to the outer edges and form smaller air inlets in front of the front wheels, one each on the left and right. In all three air inlets, there are aerodynamically optimised wing-like cross fins that are finished in high-gloss black; integrated in each of them are brushed aluminium fins. Their visual effect is to further emphasise the width of the New Midsize Coupé. The front end is given an unmistakable look by a chrome strip that frames the lower air inlets â" its two sections begin on the left and right sides of the painted central area of the bumper, and they run outwards. The chrome strip is more than a decorative element: at its outer ends it houses the LED indicators. Stylistically, this wrap-around strip creates a strong bracket that emphasises the charismatic contour of the front end. No other car in this segment has such an impressive, wide and sporty appearance as the New Midsize Coupé.
Side profile ... The designers also styled the side profile in an extremely powerful way. Striking here are the roof line at the top with just two side windows and the fast, coupé-like C-pillars that sweep back towards the rear. Another sports car trait is the passenger cabin that is set far back; this emphasises the long bonnet and the proportionately short boot lid. Another perfect example of high-class Volkswagen Design is the shoulder section of the concept car. It runs on two levels; the upper of these two levels develops a narrow line from the C-pillar to below the window sill; it broadens as it moves forward and finally forms a v-shaped contour in the bonnet and front wings â" expressing pure power and elegance. Meanwhile, the lower of the two levels begins at the front of the car as a very narrow line that represents the upper limit of what is known as the tornado line; it then runs over the wheel arch flare and becomes increasingly broader towards the rear, forming the powerful shoulders of the rear body.
... precise character line. Positioned on what is known as the character line are the door handles, which also adopt the extremely precise modulation. This integration of the door handles is extremely complex; it is a masterful achievement of production technology, and this represents a unique selling point of Volkswagen. On the lower side body, there is another line, and beneath it the striking design of the side sill that is finished entirely in metal. The interplay of these lines and modulation of surfaces produce an exceptionally athletic car body design. Last but not least, the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with 245/40 low profile tyres completely fill the wheel housings and give the car the image of a sports car in side profile. The inner surfaces of the machine-polished wheels are painted black. The outer wheel surfaces include segments painted in "Dragon Red" body colour, so that as soon as the New Midsize Coupé begins to move, this small cluster creates the visual effect of a circular band in body colour.
Rear section ... Like the front and sides of the car, the rear body merges the forms of a coupé with those of a saloon. The crisp design of the boot lid features a rear spoiler that is uniformly integrated into the design and terminates with a distinctive dual edge: at the top, the designers created an aerodynamic trailing edge that optimises the downforce at the rear axle. At the bottom, there is a light refracting edge that lowers the visual centre of gravity of the rear body. On the next level, there is another line in the middle of the boot lid at the height of the VW badge, which extends into the rear lights and emphasises the width of the New Midsize Coupé.
... LED rear lights. The 3D design of the LED rear lights with their integrated aluminium elements is especially prominent. Within these aluminium components are the uniformly illuminated LED surfaces of the rear lights. Aluminium and LED surfaces form a trapezoid-shaped angle towards the outside; the LEDs in these areas generate the rear lights and turn indicators. An opposing strip in the middle implements the brake light. Located at the far outer ends are the LED reversing lights â" they are minimalistically small but shine very brightly.
... diffuser with dual tailpipes. The bottom of the NMC rear bumper ends in a high-gloss black diffuser. Integrated to the left and right here are the dual exhaust tailpipes with a cross-piece between them; a chrome trim piece that visually connects the two tailpipes. Barely visible when not in use are the reflectors integrated above the tailpipes.
220 PS engine. The exhaust pipes lead at the other end of the New Midsize Coupé to a 162 kW / 220 PS TSI engine. The 2-litre turbo petrol injection engine accelerates the coupé to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. On German motorways or a racetrack the concept car would be able to reach a speed of 244 km/h. Thanks to the efficiency of the turbocharged engine, the similarly efficient 7-speed dual clutch gearbox, a still lower weight than the Jetta or Passat and a cD value of 0.299 (cD x A = 0.643 m2) the sports car performance is accompanied by fuel consumption of just 6.4 l/100 km.
Sporty interior with lots of room. Driver-focussed and fitted with leather sports seats, the interior too follows the dynamic concept of a coupé. Nonetheless, the New Midsize Coupé is in no way tight or constricted. Instead, it offers ample space for up to five people. The inner surfaces of the seats are designed in a bright "Silk" colour, while the outer areas form a contrast in the dark "Ebony Black". The inner and outer surfaces are visually separated by elegant piping in "Dragon Red", which is the body paint colour. Sophisticated interior elements include the trim strips in piano finish look and the many components trimmed in Alcantara such as the rooflining and the roof pillars. The controls, including the multifunction sports steering wheel and the infotainment system, are based on MQB-A (Modular Transverse Matrix A) and have thus been adapted from the current Golf. Combined with the axles and the width of MQB-B (the modules of the next larger vehicle class), the result is spacious conditions not just in the passenger compartment, but in the boot as well, which is of an excellent size with a capacity of 500 litres. Over and above this, Volkswagen is demonstrating with this concept coupé just how multifaceted the Modular Transverse Matrix is and what exciting models Volkswagen customers all over the world can look forward to over the next few years.

Followup Motorcyclist injured another arrested in aftermath of NYC Land Rover chase w video

Sundays incident between a black Land Rover Range Rover Sport and a fleet of motorcycles in New York City has been a topic of conversation across the internet, particularly here at Autoblog, where you, our readers, have racked up over 175,000 views and over 600 comments - some of which were quite cross - as of this writing. When the story first surfaced, conflicting reports from outlets as varied as the Daily Mail and Fox News made it difficult to determine what was what. Now, though, theres becoming a common consensus of information, and we wanted to update you with what is known. Bear with us, theres a lot of info here.
33-year-old Alexian Lien was driving with his wife and two-year-old daughter in the familys Range Rover Sport when they encountered a group of motorcyclists on a loosely organized ride known as "Hollywood Stuntz." No one, police included, seem to be sure what happened before video started rolling, but when it did, we saw 28-year-old Christopher Cruz appear to brake-check the SUV, with Lien tapping the motorcycles rear wheel. This is where things begin to get murky.
Lien reportedly stopped after bumping Cruzs motorcycle, and according to New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, "They [the bikers] take their helmets and they start to dent his car, and apparently his tires are slashed with a knife." Fearing for his familys safety, Lien punched the gas, hitting three bikers â" one of whom, contrary to yesterdays reports, was so seriously injured that if he survives, he may never walk again â" and roaring off into the distance.
According to The New York Times, one of the bikers contradicted Commissioner Kellys report, saying, "No biker became aggressive with the driver after the incident." Allegedly, it wasnt until Lien took off that things turned violent.
Read the rest of the story and see the video below.
The 50-block, six-minute-long chase ended when Lien exited the West Side Highway at West 178th Street in Washington Heights, as his tires started to fail, according to police sources cited by The New York Post. The bikers caught up, with one using his helmet to smash the Land Rovers drivers side window. The gang ripped Lien out of his vehicle and beat him to the point that he was treated for lacerations and a pair of black eyes at Columbia University Medical Center.
Cruz, the man said to have brake-checked Lien, has been arrested by the NYPD and charged with a number of crimes, including reckless endangerment, menacing and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17, according to Fox News. As for 32-year-old Edwin Mieses, the seriously injured biker, he was reportedly rushed to St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital, where hes currently in a medically induced coma. He was treated for two broken legs, spinal fractures and bruised lungs, with doctors unsure if hell ever walk again. The New York Daily News is reporting that although police are still investigating, there arent any plans to charge Lien for the injuries to Mieses.
If you havent seen the controversial video of the incident, it can be viewed in the original post, or you can see it below. Fair warning, its rather disturbing.
