2014 Mini Cooper S vs 2014 Fiat 500 Abarth

These two tiny city cars are very cute, practical, and get good gas mileage. But one is Italian and one is British. So, two different personalities in a very similar package. But which is better?

2. Mini Cooper S

The Mini Cooper has been around since the 60s and got a major facelift in 2000 and has received some minor changes since. The engine you get in the S trim level is a 184-hp turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder that propels the car from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. So I guess it doesnt really "propel" the car, more like "moderately roll it in a laid-back fashion." But other than the slow acceleration, the car is extremely fun to drive. It isnt especially good on the track, but the experience on-road is one of the most fun to drive cars that arent among Lamborghini and Ferrari supercars, which are very fun as well. But its performance is not as good as it should be, so it loses this comparison.

1. Fiat 500 Abarth

The Fiat 500 has earned a place in my heart for being one of the most hip and stylish cars of the last 2 years, as well as being one of the cheapest good cars. The Abarth-spec 500 has a turbocharged 1.4 liter inline-4 that produces around 160 horsepower and 170 lb-feet of torque. A little less powerful than the Mini, but better performance. And anyways, who cares if it has 20 horsepower less than the Mini if it is more fun to drive and faster? 0-60 takes around 6.2 seconds and gets a very good EPA rating of 28/32 mpg. I think it is a better car than the Mini because it has most of Fiats attention, where as with the Mini, their attention is spread out to many cars, like the Countryman and the Paceman.

HTC M8 to have a Mini sibling with a 4 5 inch display and on screen buttons

The forthcoming HTC M8, or HTC One 2 as its been coined, hasnt even arrived yet, but theres already word of the inevitable scaled back version for those with smaller pockets.

According to prolific phone leaker @evleaks, the HTC M8 mini will arrive with a 4.5-inch, 720p display. Thats up from the 4.3-inch 720p screen that headlined the HTC One Mini.

Theres also an improvement in the processing department, with a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, supposedly on-board. The current HTC One Mini also rocked the Snapdragon 400, but with only two cores.

Interestingly, the leakster claims the M8 Mini will have also have the on-screen buttons speculation suggests will be present on the full-size device.

Yeah, M8

In the camera department Mr. Leaks reckons there are 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel ensemble to be found on the HTC M8 Mini, while the HTC Sense 6.0 UI may also be along for the party.

Traditionally, the likes of HTC and Samsung have given it a few months before outing the smaller versions of their flagship handsets and wed expect that to be the case this time also.

However, given this information is out there at this state, its not out of the realms of possibility that HTC could launch both handsets simultaneously.

If HTC does indeed launch a handset branded Mini at 4.5-inches, what does that mean for the iPhone which maxes out at a dinky 4-inches?

Android 4 4 KitKat update heading to Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

Samsung is preparing an Android 4.4 KitKat update for a number of mid-range Galaxy handsets, including the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini.

An image containing the list of mid-range handsets eligible for the Android 4.4 KitKat update has been leaked online.

The apparently official list entitled “KRT16 update under investigation for mid-range devices” lists seven devices Samsung is looking to upgrade.

The Galaxy S4 mini is named alongside the Samsung Galaxy Ace 3, Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Samsung Galaxy Core and Samsung Galaxy Fame in the UK.

Samsung has already said the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will all be getting a taste of KitKat.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any download dates for these KitKat upgrades but we’ll keep you posted of any updates.

One of the defining features of Android 4.4 KitKat is that it is compatible with older smartphones with less memory.

“With KitKat, we’ve slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time”, explained Google at launch.

Android 4.4 KitKat can run on smartphones with as little as 512MB of RAM, so it makes it easier for manufacturers to update mid-range and entry-level handsets.

Samsung will have to tweak its TouchWiz UI to be compatible with Android 4.4 KitKat on lower-specced devices before the rollout can commence.

Other features of Android 4.4 KitKat include voice search, improved multitasking capabilities and prioritised contacts based on those who you communicate with most.

Google also checks local businesses for a match when you receive a call from an unknown number on Android 4.4.

The Google Messages app has also been ditched in favour of a new, improved Hangouts app. This groups all messages from a single contact in one place, regardless of whether it’s an email, text or other chat type.

HTC One Mini pictures and specs leak again

One of the worst kept secrets in all of tech land, a new array of images and claimed specs for the heavily rumoured HTC One Mini have started doing the rounds.

Hitting the web ahead of the phone’s expected unveiling in the coming weeks, the latest HTC One Mini pictures show a phone which looks markedly similar to the 4.7-inch flagship HTC One, just scaled down to a more pocketable 4.3-inch form factor.

An expected rival to the Mini model of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the as yet unconfirmed HTC One Mini has been the thing of much rumour and speculation for a number of weeks, with the latest leaks claiming to confirm the handset’s full array of innards.

While a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720p HD display will see the mid-market spinoff touchdown with a higher resolution display to that of its S4 Mini branded rival, its mooted 1.4GHz dual-core CPU is down on the Samsung’s 1.7GHz dual-core offering.

With a HTC One Mini release date rumoured for August, it has been suggested that the phone will run Google’s latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean direct from the box. Although the full sized model launched with Android 4.1 in tow, a HTC One Android 4.2.2 update was recently rolled out to UK based users.

Maintaining the same 4-UltraPixel rear-mounted camera and BoomSound stereo speakers as its iPhone 5 rivalling sibling, the HTC One Mini specs sheet has been rumoured to be rounded off by a 1.6-megapixel forward-facing snapper and 1GB of RAM.

With no word having yet surfaced on potential HTC One Mini pricing, the phone’s battery size is also still up in the air.

Nokia Lumia 1520V mini pictures appear ahead of potential April release date

Images of the purported Nokia Lumia 1520V mini have appeared online with a suggested April release date.

Earlier this month, information about a mini version of the Nokia Lumia 1520 emerged online, which has now been backed by some leaked images.

The images appeared on some Chinese websites, showing the 1520V next to an iPhone 4S and the full-sized Lumia 1520.

Nokia unveiled the Lumia 1520 in December as the manufacturer’s first large-screen, full 1080p HD Windows 8 smartphone.

In comparison to the Lumia 1520’s 6-inch display, the 1520V was tipped to have a 4.3-inch 1080 x 1920p full HD screen. However, the latest rumours suggest the actual retail edition will have a 4.45-inch 768 x 1280p HD display.

It will supposedly be powered by a 2370mAh battery, but that’s all we know for now.

The Chinese sources suggest the Nokia Lumia 1520V will be released in April, rather than a dedicated technology show like MWC 2014.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Features
Along with the 6-inch full HD display, the 1520 features a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM.

The 1520 also has a 20-megapixel PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilisation and dual LED flash. This rear camera is capable of full 1080p HD video recording at 30fps and is paired with a 1.2-megapixel front camera.

Coming equipped with a microSD card slot with 64GB support, the 1520 comes with 32GB of internal storage and users also get access to 7GB of OneDrive cloud storage.

It is powered by a 3,400mAh battery and runs Windows Phone 8. It is also eligible for the Lumia Black update, which offers features like notifications and camera tweaks.

iPad mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 deemed most fragile gadgets

The iPad mini and the Samsung Galaxy S4 have been deemed the most fragile gadgets in an experiment by an insurance company.

A study involving drop tests onto concrete and water dunks has discovered the top ten most fragile gadgets currently available to buy.

The research carried out by insurance firm SquareTrade Europe included looking at the design and construction of the devices, as well as their weight, grip and water resistance.

“We are all investing in more and more technology, so when we do we want to make sure that we are going to get our money’s worth”, said Kevin Gillan, MD of SquareTrade Europe. “By putting devices through tests that replicate real life situations, we want to help people make smart choices when it comes to choosing gadgets and ensure they are covered against accidental damage.”

All the test results and phone specs were put together to form SquareTrade’s “breakability score”, where higher numbers indicated a more fragile device.

Unfortunately for Apple, four iOS products made it into the top ten. The iPad mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 were shown to be the most breakable out of the lot though.

Google and Samsung make up the rest of the list outside Apple products, with three products each in the top ten.

Samsung actually did the worst as the S4 took second place and the Samsung Galaxy S3 was in fourth place.

At least Google and Apple learnt some lessons with design generations, as the iPad Air was deemed less fragile that the iPad mini, iPhone 5C more fragile than the iPhone 5S and the Google Nexus 7 2 less breakable than its predecessor.

The full list is as follows:

1.    iPad mini – 7.5
2.    Samsung Galaxy S4 – 7
3.    iPad Air – 6.5
4.    Samsung Galaxy S3 – 6.5
5.    iPhone 5C – 6
6.    Nexus 7.1 – 6
7.    Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 – 5.5
8.    iPhone 5S – 5
9.    Nexus 7 2 – 5
10.    Moto X – 4.5

Sony Xperia Z1 mini passes through FFC with new Amami codename

The heavily rumoured Sony Xperia Z1 has been spotted gaining FCC certification and is due to launch in Europe early next year.

Previously known as the Sony Xperia Z1s, the Xperia Z1 mini is now going under a new name – Amami.

Sony has already released an Xperia Z1 mini in the form of the Xperia Z1f, but its only for Japanese markets. This smaller version of the Sony Xperia Z1 is supposedly destined for other worldwide markets in the New Year.

The FFC certification tips that the Sony Xperia Z1 mini will launch with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean rather than the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS featured in devices like the Google Nexus 5.

Other smartphone manufacturers have already launched their own miniature versions of flagships smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini, but they haven’t proved as popular with consumers as their beefier counterparts.

However, it seems Sony is taking a slightly different tack with the Sony Xperia Z1 mini bound for European shores.

Unlike other mini flagships, the Z1 mini should feature the same processor as the powerful Xperia Z1. This means the Z1 mini will have a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU.

The Z1 mini should also retain the Z1’s 20.7-megapixel rear camera with f.20, 27mm wide angle lens and 3x digital zoom. This rear camera also has 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS CMOS sensor and Bionz image processing engine.

The biggest difference between the two smartphones will obviously be the screen size. The Z1 mini is said to have a 4.3-inch display, in comparison to the flagship Sony Xperia Z1.

Sony is heavily anticipated to unveil the Xperia Z1 mini at CES during its January 6 press conference.

HTC One Mini leaked by O2 alongside larger HTC One Max

HTC looks set to follow in Samsung’s footsteps and create a number of spinoffs iterations of its flagship phone, with the HTC One Mini leaking via an O2 roadmap alongside a larger HTC One Max.

With the HTC One arguably the best smartphone on the market right now, the Taiwanese manufacturer looks intent on capitalising on this popular branding, with smaller and larger spinoffs of the flagship phone being teased by the German arm of network giant O2.

Samsung has already paved the way in producing numerous variations of its flagship phone, with the Samsung Galaxy S4 having been joined by the 4.3-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, waterproof Samsung Galaxy S4 Active and 10x optical zoom camera hosting Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

According to latest reports, an internal O2 roadmap has seen the much rumoured HTC One Mini tipped for arrival in both silver and black colour schemes. Suggesting HTC could also look to target the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a phablet themed HTC One Max has also been listed for release. At present HTC has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of either device.

HTC One Mini Rumours

Long tipped for arrival, HTC One Mini rumours have suggested the mooted handset will be cut from similar cloth as last year’s Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, pairing a reduced form factor styled on its flagship sibling with a reduced array of specs and a lower price point, all targeting the mid-range smartphone market.

Recent HTC One Mini rumours have suggested the handset will drop from the One’s 4.7-inch form to an S4 Mini rivalling 4.3-inchs, going from a 1080p Full HD display to a 720p HD screen along the way.

Further reports have claimed the HTC One Mini spec will see a dual-core processor come into the fray alongside 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. With the HTC One’s 4-ultrapixel rear-mounted camera tipped to make the jump, Mini, the smaller smartphone is set to feature a brushed aluminium form like its big brother.

While less it known about the mooted HTC One Max, it has been suggested the oversized phone will run a 5.9-inch Full HD display and a 2.3GHZ CPU.
